Luminant Scholar Program Approaches $150,000 in Scholarships and Grants

DALLAS -

With 31 ceremonies in the books this fall and three grand prize events on the horizon, the Luminant Scholar Program is giving $50,000 in scholarships and grants in 2010 and is well on its way to reaching $150,000 in awards over the past three years.

Through the Luminant Scholar Program, fifth-graders in select Texas public school districts write a one-page essay answering the question “How can I help protect the environment?” Students share their innovative ideas on environmental conservation and learned how they can improve it – with the authors of the top essays awarded scholarships for their future education.

“The Luminant Scholar Program is more than an essay contest, but also a learning and development tool to encourage students to take action in their communities,” said Phil Wilson, senior vice president of public affairs at Luminant. “It is our hope that the program will motivate students to continue protecting the Earth and to pursue environmental learning opportunities though the scholarships and grants we provide.”

Each year of the program, one winner from every participating district is awarded a $1,000 United States Savings Bond. The winning student's school is then eligible to win a $5,000 grand prize, awarded at the conclusion of each year's program.
