Our Committment to Sustainability
At Luminant, our commitment to service has always gone far beyond generating electricity. We're also invested in the communities where we live and work. We operate in a safe and environmentally sound manner for the well-being of the public and our employees, provide community support and contribute to the country's economic development, and respect and engender diversity in our workforce and suppliers. We've focused our energies on being socially responsible since Luminant's predecessors turned on electric lights in 1882, and we're looking forward to powering the future.
Our operations produce a significant economic benefit to through payrolls, purchases, contracts, taxes and capital expenditures. We are the largest taxpayer by a wide margin in virtually all the communities where we operate plants, contributing tens of millions of dollars annually in property taxes alone. We also invest billions of dollars in infrastructure improvements and development, and our plants and mines provide thousands of high-quality jobs, especially in the rural areas of the state.
When there are community needs, Luminant's neighbors know our employees will be there. In addition to their contributions, Luminant employees also spend thousands of hours helping others, serving on myriad civic organizations and volunteering countless hours for the well-being of their neighbors and communities.
Over the years, Luminant has been in the forefront of environmental stewardship and innovation. Today we continue to deliver on our commitment to provide reliable and increasingly clean sources of electricity to help meet the needs of a growing population and move toward an even more environmentally sound future.
Our stewardship begins with maintaining an excellent compliance record that meets or outperforms all applicable federal and state environmental laws and regulations. No one has more experience than Luminant in using coal to generate electricity in an environmentally excellent way and with an exceptional track record of reducing emissions. At the same time, we are committed to technology development, renewable energy and zero-emission nuclear generation that will improve the quality of the environment for all.
Safety is Luminant's top priority – the safety of our neighbors, our employees and our facilities. At Comanche Peak Nuclear Power Plant, our employees regularly conduct drills on a variety of emergency scenarios to ensure optimal response should an emergency occur.
In the unlikely event that an emergency at the plant should affect local residents, our emergency information website provides important information. Comanche Peak also publishes multiple pages of emergency information in the Granbury-Glen Rose edition of the Lone Star Yellow Pages. Both resources outline emergency notification processes, shelter locations and emergency classifications.
