  • 2009 Luminant Scholar Program Awards Three Texas Schools $5,000 Grand Prize Grants
12.14.2009 Written by

DALLAS –

Three Luminant Scholar Program environmental essays from Glen Rose, Mt. Pleasant and Paris were selected as grand prize winners out of nearly 12,000 submissions across 40 Texas school districts. Glen Rose Intermediate School in Glen Rose, P.E. Wallace Middle School in Mt. Pleasant and Aikin Elementary School in Paris will receive $5,000 Luminant grants for their students’ creativity and commitment to environmental stewardship.

As part of the 2009 Luminant Scholar Program, fifth-grade students across Texas wrote one-page essays capturing the theme, “How can I help protect the environment?” One winning student from each of the 40 participating school districts was awarded a $1,000 United States Savings Bond, making their school eligible to win the grand prize.

“This year, the Luminant Scholar Program reached twice as many students as it did in 2008, spreading an important message of protecting our natural resources,” said Robert Gentry, Luminant Scholar Director. “We’ve been inspired by the creative ideas and enthusiasm our students have shown, and it’s our hope they will continue making positive changes in their communities.”

The 2009 Luminant Scholar Program awarded a total of $55,000 in scholarships and grants. Each winning student was recognized at their school’s ceremony, which included the participation of teachers, parents, school administrators and elected officials.

Award ceremonies for the three grand prize winning schools will be held in early 2010.
