Luminant Honored with Employers for Education Excellence Award
Dallas -

The State Board of Education award recognizes Comanche Peak Nuclear Power Plant for its volunteer work with area students

Luminant's Comanche Peak Nuclear Power Plant has been named a recipient of the State Board of Education's Employers for Education Excellence Award for 2012. The gold-level award recognizes employees' outstanding support of Texas public schools.

"Educational outreach is an essential part of Luminant's community involvement, and we take great pride in our work with area schools,” said Rafael Flores, Luminant's chief nuclear officer. "Our employees are committed to helping our next generation of leaders grow and develop, and we are honored to see their worthwhile efforts recognized.”

The plant's educational efforts include a spectrum of employee volunteer activities from mentoring to participation in parent-teacher conferences, with Glen Rose ISD superintendent Wayne Rotan estimating that more than 25 percent of Comanche Peak's workforce is involved locally. As part of the Women in Nuclear team, employees partner with elementary school students to visit nursing homes and to take part in classroom discussions of career exploration. Employees have also worked with high school environmental science classes since 2002 to monitor the water quality of the Paluxy River, and in 2010, they began a new partnership to restore habitat for bobwhite quail and eastern bluebird at Squaw Creek Park.

"We're very appreciative of the partnership between Comanche Peak and Glen Rose ISD,” said Rotan. "The support and mentorship of our students are very valuable in adding relevance to our curriculum; students can go beyond the classroom and learn things hands-on. We are very excited to see Comanche Peak's team get the credit they deserve.”

Further, in the 2011-2012 school year, Luminant began two new mentoring programs, POWER SET and WIT. POWER SET stands for Powerful Opportunities for Women Eager and Ready for Science, Engineering and Technology, while WIT represents Workforce Industry Training. Both programs are partnerships developed by the Nuclear Power Institute at Texas A&M University to promote confidence and the expansion of professional options for local high school students.
