Helping the next generation of scientists, nearly 20 employees from Luminant’s Comanche Peak Nuclear Power Plant and DeCordova Power Plant recently volunteered as judges for the Granbury ISD Science and Engineering Fair. Luminant also awarded three $500 scholarships – for a total of $1,500 – to three winning entries as part of the company’s longstanding commitment to educational partnerships, especially those building skills in science, technology, engineering and math, or STEM.

“The company and its employees are proud to invest in our communities and participate in educational outreach activities that empower students to pursue their interests in STEM fields,” said Caroline Atkins, Luminant corporate affairs manager. “There’s a lot of hard work and creativity that goes into each one of these projects and it’s exciting to know that our employees are helping to develop future leaders and scientists.”

For Luminant’s volunteer judges, the science and engineering fair was an opportunity to provide mentorship, pass along real-world knowledge and boost students’ enthusiasm for STEM.

“As an engineer, I’m passionate about science and giving back to the community is what it’s all about,” said Chase Dube, Luminant DeCordova Power Plant engineer and science fair judge. “I remember participating in science fairs when I was younger and learning the importance of asking questions, looking for ways to improve my project and always thinking of new ideas. I see myself in these students and I hope they continue to pursue their passion for science.”

This February, winning projects will advance to the Fort Worth Regional Science and Engineering Fair, held at the University of Texas at Arlington. Learn more about Luminant’s educational outreach and community initiatives at www.Luminant.com.
