  • Comanche Peak Celebrates 20 Years of Commercial Operations
08.10.2010 Written by

Plant has provided reliable electricity and strong community support since August 1990

In its first 20 years, Comanche Peak Nuclear Power Plant and the Luminant employees who keep it operating safely have generated more than 323 million net megawatt hours of electricity, helped contribute more than $1 billion to the communities in which the plant operates and given tens of thousands of hours in support of local organizations.

Comanche Peak Unit 1 began generating electricity for ERCOT reliability dispatch on August 13, 1990. Since then, the plant and its employees have been committed community members, making significant local and regional contributions.

“Comanche Peak is much more than a source of dependable electricity, it’s a dedicated community partner, committed to supporting its neighbors and providing stable, well-paying jobs,” said Rafael Flores, Luminant’s chief nuclear officer. “We are proud of what we’ve accomplished in the last 20 years and look forward to continuing our tradition of safety, operational excellence and community involvement for many years to come.”

Highlights from the last 20 years include:

  • Generated more than 170 million net megawatt hours of electricity from Unit 1 alone; this is the equivalent of enough electricity to power 500,000 average Texas homes for 20 plus years or the entire state of Texas for nearly half a year.
  • Provided thousands of jobs during construction and commissioning, as well as more than 1,000 permanent full-time positions during current operation.
  • Contributed more than $1 billion to local communities, through tax payments and other monetary donations.
  • Logged nearly 1,000 employee volunteer hours in the last year alone.
  • Implemented a variety of proven, successful safety programs that have contributed to the plant’s current 3.5 million safe work hour streak.
  • Continued financing of the more than $45 million construction of Lake Granbury with roughly $1 million per year in revenue bonds.
