Luminant Academy Achieves LEED Certification
DALLAS -

First in Tyler, Texas to be recognized for environmentally sound interior

Luminant Academy has been awarded Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification for its green interior design – making it the first LEED-certified facility in Tyler, Texas.

With features such as recyclable metal wall coverings, counters made from reclaimed metal shavings and low-flow plumbing fixtures, Luminant Academy's LEED for Commercial Interiors certification affirms the building's sustainability, efficiency and indoor environmental quality.

“As a power generator, we understand the importance of reliability and efficiency. Through the creation of this LEED-certified training facility, we're instilling those virtues in our new employees from their first days of employment,” said Dirk Hughes, Luminant Academy director. “We're extremely proud of this accomplishment and the strong design work that made it a reality.”

The facility, located on Tyler Junior College's West Campus, was constructed in 2000, but the interior remained unfinished until Luminant Academy committed to the location in June 2007. Luminant began the building design process in the spring of 2007, with LEED certification top of mind.

“Luminant Academy's LEED certification further demonstrates their commitment to social and environmental development as an organization that prepares the workforce with ever-important training and skills to succeed,” said Rick Fedrizzi, President, CEO & Founding Chair of U.S. Green Building Council, the developer of the LEED program.

Additional highlights of Luminant Academy's LEED efforts include*:
  • Lighting controls and Energy Star-rated equipment
  • Reuse of existing furnishings and purchase of pre-owned furnishings
  • Increased ventilation and indoor air quality during both construction and occupation
  • Support for alternate transportation, such as mass transit, carpooling, bicycles and alternatively-fueled vehicles

Luminant Academy was founded in 2006 as a technical, lean manufacturing and leadership training facility for Luminant's power generation, mining and construction teams. In 2008, the state-of-the-art facility logged more than 130,000 training hours.
